Rep. Maloy releases HB 282: Voluntary Firearms Restrictions Amendments
HB282 allows someone to voluntarily place themselves on a firearm restricted list. This essentially makes it so they cannot purchase a firearm. The person cannot be forced to do this, and they can remove themselves from the list following a waiting time. They are automatically removed from the list after 180 days unless they renew their desire to stay on it.
This bill along with other laws such as Utah’s safe harbor law provides an option for those who may be suicidal, suffering from depression, going through some kind of crisis or tension to make them, their homes, and their families safe during those vulnerable times. It does not infringe on Second Amendment rights since it is completely voluntary.
It does give people who are close to a person in crisis or who may be working closely with them – such as family members, close friends, clergy, or mental health professionals – the opportunity to suggest or recommend these voluntary options for safety, but only the individual can decide to voluntarily place themselves on the firearms restricted list.
I’m pleased to sponsor this bill to help gun owners exercise their Second Amendment rights in a responsible and safe manner.
