Bill Updates

As the floor sponsor, I am pleased to inform you about the status of S.B. 115, Firearm Preemption Amendments. This week, S.B. 115 was passed out of committee and continues to make great progress throughout the process. I am proud of the work that has gone into this bill.

Bill Highlights

I support our healthcare workers and am proud to work on H.B. 295, Physician Workforce Amendments. My proposal has money to provide more intrastate physician education and subsequent workforce within Utah. The support that this bill has received from the medical community has been incredible--unlike anything I have seen for other healthcare-related bills this session.

My intern, Nathan, and I had the pleasure of meeting with several executive branch officials this week, including Governor Cox and Lieutenant Governor Henderson.

Tax Cut

I am pleased to report that the Utah House passed a tax amendment, S.B. 59, that will provide relief for all Utah taxpayers. The $190 million tax cut will include three parts:

  • A reduced income tax rate that will go from 4.95% to 4.85% (This is a total of $158 million).
  • A $16 million earned income tax credit that will grant relief to the people who need it most in our state.
  • A $15 million Social Security tax cut which raises the cap to qualify for the credit we passed last year.

Teacher Appreciation

Teachers work tirelessly to help our children succeed and the past two years have been especially straining on them. Not only have you adapted to at-home learning and virtual teaching, but you faced staff and teacher shortages that added to your plates that were already full. My colleagues and I admire your ability to step up during these challenging times and all of the ways that you go above and beyond to help students and our children succeed. Please watch this video to learn how the Utah House is working to support our hard-working teachers.

Utah Secures #1 Economy in the Country

Just this past week, U.S. News and World Report issued its economic rankings, which measures each state's economic stability and potential. Utah secured the top spot overall with a population of about 3,206,000 people and a strong economic Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of $193 billion! Click here to learn more

Twentieth Anniversary of the Olympics

February 8th marked the 20-year anniversary of the 2002 opening ceremonies for the Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. To appreciate the Utah Olympic Legacy, the Utah House passed HJR12 to recognize the organizations involved in the 2002 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. This resolution also encourages continued efforts to maintain Olympic winter sports venues in our state.
